What You Can Expect from Us

Prenatal Care

• During prenatal visits we monitor your pregnancy by doing routine lab tests, urinalysis, checking your blood pressure, weight and the baby’s growth, position, and heart rate.
  
  
• We offer counselling and information.
  
  
• Prenatal visits occur once a month for the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, then every two weeks between 28 and 36 weeks. They are every week from 36 weeks until the birth of your baby.
  
  
• We do a prenatal home visit at 36-37 weeks.
  
  
• Family members or other support people involved in your care are always welcome to attend appointments. (We have a small play area for children.)

Labour and Birth

• Midwives provide primary care during labour and birth. When you are in active labour your midwife will attend you at home. The second midwife will join you toward the end of your labour and will also be with you for the birth of your baby.
  
  
• We monitor the progress of labour, assess the well-being of you and your baby, and we provide you with ongoing emotional support and comfort measures. If you plan to give birth in the hospital we go with you to the hospital at an appropriate time, and we will continue to provide the primary care you require to birth your baby.

After You Give Birth to Your Baby

• After the birth your midwife will stay with you and your baby for around three hours to make sure you are both doing well and to help you with breastfeeding. Also, we will do a complete physical exam of your baby.
  
  
• Postpartum home visits take place usually on day 1, 3, 5 and again between days 7 and 10.
  
  
• Postpartum visits in the clinic take place at 2 weeks and between 3 to 4 weeks. The final visit will be when your baby is 6 weeks old.
  
  
• More visits will be scheduled if necessary.
  
  
• During the postpartum period midwives offer emotional support, assistance with breastfeeding, education regarding baby care, and about taking care of yourself after the baby is born. We also monitor the well-being of you and your baby.
